INDUSTRY WATCH: The Energy Industry is creating thousands of jobs in 2011
Today at a press preview for the 2010 Geothermal Energy Expo, hosted by the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA), Executive Director Karl Gawell announced the findings of new industry reports that show the geothermal industry will add thousands of jobs as dozens of new clean geothermal power plants come online or enter advanced stages of development. GEA released reports on job creation in the geothermal industry and an industry update that showed how the industry is creating more jobs than conventional energy and is creating jobs that are permanent, full-time, and often provide a higher wage; in some cases with pay that doubles county and state averages.

400 Jobs in GA
- (Jackson County, GA) Systemax, a Fortune 1000 company and one of the nation’s leading electronics retailers, is opening a distribution center, TigerDirect retail store and business sales office in Jefferson. The company is investing $15 million in the facility and expecting to hire approximately 400 full-time local-area employees over the course of the coming five years.
USA – 500 Jobs
- (Louisville, KY / Decatur, AL / Selmer, TN / Bloomington, IN) GE announced today it plans to invest $432 million to establish four U.S.-based refrigeration design and manufacturing centers of excellence and create 500 new “green” jobs by 2014, bringing the company’s total U.S. investment announced since 2009 to more than $1 billion and jobs created to 1,300. GE’s investment demonstrates the Company’s commitment to revitalize its appliances business and is the result of its U.S. factories becoming increasingly competitive globally.
1,200 Jobs for California
- (CA) Southern California Edison (SCE) has begun construction of the state’s largest investor-owned utility photovoltaic power plant at a site in the San Joaquin Valley. The construction project is expected to create approximately 125 jobs for Central and Southern California workers…The installation will join SCE solar plants already online in Fontana and Chino, Calif., and six others under construction in Southern California’s Inland Empire. During the next five years, SCE plans to install a total of 250 million watts of solar generation at up to 100 sites. The utility also plans to sign power purchase agreements with independent producers for an equal amount of solar generation. 350 Jobs for Massachusetts
- Cape Wind is thrilled with the news that Mass Tank and EEW are going to open a new manufacturing facility in Massachusetts to make Cape Wind’s steel monopile foundations and transition pieces. We are pleased that Cape Wind is helping catalyze the emergence of an offshore wind manufacturing and supply chain in Massachusetts. These new (100-350) manufacturing jobs coming to Massachusetts, along with the 600 to 1,000 construction jobs and 150 (direct and indirect) jobs during the 25-year operations phase for Cape Wind will help establish Massachusetts as a leader in offshore wind energy.
1,000 Temporary Jobs for Southern CA
- Southern California Edison (SCE) plans this fall to shut down one of two reactor units at its San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station for a major construction program. The project involves replacing the plant’s largest components – steam generators – and will add approximately 1,000 temporary jobs to the region. The construction program will generate a total of approximately $300 million in local spending, including wages, equipment, material, and services purchased from local businesses.
USA – 4,000 New Jobs from Kohl’s Department Stores
- Kohl’s Department Stores announces the grand opening of 21 new stores across the nation and celebrates the opening of the new customer service and operations center in San Antonio, Texas that will serve Kohl’s Charge and Kohls.com customers nationwide. The new stores will bring nearly 3,000 jobs to communities across 15 states, and the new customer service and operations center in San Antonio, which recently hired approximately 200 associates, expects to create more than 1,000 jobs over the next three years.
40 Jobs for Kentucky
- (Erlanger, KY) A local ice cream maker and convenience store chain is expanding one of its less-publicly-known businesses. United Dairy Farmers announced the expansion of their Cold Chain Integrity facility, a public refrigerated warehouse located in Erlanger. The company will add a 100,000-square-foot addition to its existing facility, which will create 40 new jobs for the region, the company said in a news release Tuesday.
250 New jobs in Chicago, IL
- A $3.5 million business investment package will create 250 new jobs at Chicago-based Groupo, Inc., the nation’s leading social shopping website, the governor’s office announced Tuesday. Gov. Pat Quinn made the announcement Tuesday at Groupon’s River West headquarters. The state’s $3.5 million investment package will allow Groupon to hire 250 new employees in Chicago, the release said. Without state support, the company would have utilized its offices in other states for continued growth.

- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service (DOL VETS) agency today announced the launch of a 14-state pilot program to help veterans find meaningful employment after service to our nation…By leveraging a network of state and local chambers of commerce, this effort will expand on the Chamber’s “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative, which launched in 2008 to focus on the employment of wounded, ill, and injured veterans as they transition from military service. This program involving the Chamber and DOL VETS will educate employers on the value of hiring veterans and help connect employers with veteran talent…To support this program, Chamber executives will collaborate with the DOL VETS directors in their states to discuss sponsorship of events that offer veterans the opportunity to network with prospective employers. The pilot program will launch today in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Georgia. The Chamber’s goal for 2011 is to expand the program into all 50 states.

450 New jobs for Ireland
- UK Knack Group has learned that Hollister, one of the largest American manufacturers of Healthcare products, have announced they will invest 65m of Euros in the expansion of their manufacturing plant located in Ballina, co Mayo. This investment and expansion will create 250 new jobs…The extension of its current plant will create 250 new high quality manufacturing jobs and it is expected that during the construction period another 200 jobs will be generated. It is expected to be finished by the end of 2011 and the recruitment process of key staff in the areas of engineering and product development has already started. They are also looking for staff able to provide support in quality and supervisory roles.
UK – 200 New Jobs for Glasgow
- Tesco Bank’s employee numbers in Scotland will surpass 2,000 in 2011 after yesterday’s announcement that the Edinburgh-based lender will create 200 new jobs in Glasgow. The posts, all of which will be at Tesco Bank’s Broadway One offices, will centre on sales and customer service for its new mortgage department being set up next summer.
Bulgaria – Hewlett-Packard to Create 2,000 Jobs in Bulgaria
- The construction of a new development and support center in Bulgaria will create 2,000 new jobs, Hewlett-Packard said on Oct. 22. HP already employs a workforce of 3,000 in Bulgaria and the chief of its local subsidiary there, Iravan Hira, signed a memorandum of understanding with the government to boost its presence in the Balkan country. HP’s new project development and technical support center would employ engineers (2,000), said the group’s director for Central and Eastern Europe, Sasha Bezuhanova.
22 Jobs for Winnipeg, Canada
- Speaking to reporters at the Riverview Community Centre, Wasylycia-Leis announced three new initiatives to increase programming and strengthen the city’s community centres. The first is to invest $880,000 per year to pay administrative support staff to handle financial and administrative duties at community centres. This would create 22 new positions at three centres.
2000 Jobs in Dubai
- Hotel chain will create 2,000 new jobs in Dubai by opening five resorts in the city center over a 12 month period. Movenpick Hotels and Resorts (known as MH&R) have put their expansion plan into effect beginning with the thriving Movenpick Hotel at Jumeirah beach.Throughout 2010 the hotel chain also opened the Ibn Buttuta Gate Hotel found next to the Ibn Battuta Mall. The Movenpick Hotel Deira is a business resort in the busy commercial district of Deira set to open in 2011 along with the Royal Amwaj Resort and Spa, a luxurious beach resort set in the crescent of the Palm Jumeirah. The Oceana Hotel and Spa is rumored to be located on the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah with an opening date not yet known.
35 Jobs for Ireland
- The new office will create five new jobs immediately, with a further 30 roles expected over the next 12 months. The company, which supplies commercial archaeology services to the UK, Ireland and Europe, said the establishment of a permanent office in Dublin was “the next logical step.”
50 New Jobs for Serbia
- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic signed an agreement on the allocation of incentives worth €150,000 with the company Frigo Zika Soko in Ruma, which will create 50 new jobs. Dinkic expressed his satisfaction with the fact that this company has grown from a craftsmen shop to a middle-sized company, that it has managed to overcome all problems and reach production which is almost €8 million at an annual level, 65% of which is being exported.
200 Jobs being created in Scotland
- At a time when India is being accused of taking away jobs from the developed countries through outsourcing, a Scotland official today said the Hero Group’s call centre will create 200 jobs in his country. ”Indian company HEROtsc will create 200 new jobs in Scotland,” First Minister Alex Salmond said in statement here.
32 Jobs for Australia
- A $17 million expansion of Nestle’s Tongala production plant will create 32 new jobs and turn Victoria’s north-east into the company’s nutritional food manufacturing hub of Asia, Oceania and Africa…Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan welcomed Nestle Australia’s investment and said it was a sign of the strength of Victoria’s regions in attracting new job-creating investments.

Great topic and excellent reminder, especially for those large employers that have multiple locations, International as well, and may have an opportunity that one may have been seeking. Existing employees are already familiar with the company’s product(s) and structure, giving them the inside track.
