  1. Amazing, but altogether not surprising.

  2. In Italy pawn shops are working well only with jewel and gold and not with other kind of products.

  3. Fascinating – and surprising. I was particularly interested to see that pawn shops are the cheapest source of short term credit. Makes sense all round!

  4. Appears your best alternative is to create a relationship with your local pawn shop. Your local bank is a crook run ‘legally’ by the biggest cons in the world the government of the USA. The negative slant on pawn is only because the government is afraid it is losing its leverage, its cut on every transaction made. We need more pawn shops!

  5. I was a bit surprised that so many of the pawn shop items are recovered rather than sold. Just about everyone I’ve known to go to pawn shops was just selling stuff. Maybe people are just looking to craigslist for selling more these days since they can try for a better price than what a pawn shop might offer.

  6. People do everything in crises, so I’m not surprised.

  7. Wow. Very interesting. Besides being a good source of cheap money, you can get some good deals on used items at pawn shops. No wonder they’re so important to neighborhood economies.

  8. Very interesting. So what is the effort needed to get into the pawn shop business?
I was surprised by the numbers and the amount of people that recover their property.

Interesting Facts! I’m upset that there are more Jersey Shore viewers than Pawn Star viewers! :-)

  10. I’ve never known any of this information about pawn shops. Now I know I can pawn something and get it back. I’ve sold things on Craigs List, and been sorry when they were gone, but never considered using a pawn shop. Now I know.

  11. The capitalistic system at it’s best.

  12. I had no idea the pawn industry was that big…I may need to go shopping at one of these places to find a deal.

  13. The Pawn industry is the lowest common denominator of: When all else fails I’ll buy your stuff for next to nothing which will compound your dilemma. Have a nice day!

  14. I’d take a small, short term, SECURED personal loan on an item over running up a credit card bill any day. Pawn shops have been vilified by the media, and that’s why they only exist in places where people truly need them; no one wants a pawn shop in their neighborhood, because “it attracts undesirables.” Truth be told, if the American people leveraged the assets that they actually have instead of taxing future earnings, we probably wouldn’t have half of the economic problems that we’ve created.

  15. I agree with some of the sentiments discussed above in that pawn shops seem to have got a bad rap of the years as banks rose to take their place. Now, by comparison, they look like a bargain and far less crooked.
