How To Protect Your Resume From Identity Thieves

Someone responded to one of my videos with a statement and question. Here it is…

“Great tips Jim. Just one concern I have about posting a resume online for free viewing- Security, how can you keep your personal information safe from identy thieves? – Clara”

I gave a few thoughts from the top of my head and then I thought, why not add them to the blog too? So, I’m doing that now. This was my response.

Clara,

My 2 cents of advice…

1. Go to Google.com/voice and get a free phone number. Use that for your phone number.
2. Set up a separate email that redirects to your regular email.
3. List the city and state you are in, but not your home address.
4. Instead of listing your current job, cite it as “Major Telecom Company” instead of MCI (as an example).

Happy Hunting!

Jim Stroud

P.S.  Hmm… I think I will do a video on this topic and go a bit deeper. THANK YOU for your question.

  1. Identity theft has become such a huge problem, and one that I’ve unfortunately dealt with personally. Never even thought about how someone’s online resume could make them vulnerable, great suggestions!

  7. On job applications do not put your social security number of drivers license number. Those are two items valued by identity thieves.
