5 Job Search Tips for 2012

A new year means a new start, a new perspective, and breaking old habits. Before making your resolutions, consider revamping your job search tactics. Job search trends of 2011 included creating the infographic resume, using QR codes, and writing your own blog.

So what strategies are trending for 2012? StartWire, an online job search organizer, has released their first annual “2012 Best-Kept Job Search Tips.” Consider these five tips below:

Apply Early. A recent study reveals that 50% of company hires were applicants who applied within the first week and approximately 75% of all hired candidates applied within three weeks of the job posting

Keep up on Company News. After you’ve compiled your list of target companies, read up on their current news. The newspaper, company website, or their social media accounts can report their positive announcements – which can lead to more job opportunities posted by them.

Understand A Company’s Hiring Approach. Each company has a different way of recruiting and hiring candidates – for example, a company may solely hire on employee referrals. For the companies you’re interested in, learn what kinds of processes bring candidates to them so that you can adapt.

Join a Professional Organization.  Joining a local chapter of a professional organization allows you to network and find those who may have a lead or connection for you.

Network Through Social Media. Following the company’s twitter account may not be enough, so engage with other users that work in the company. Research shows that 1 in 10 candidates whose resumes come through a referral are hired, compared to 1 in 100 general applicants.

Job seekers: What do you think of these tips? Will you be changing your job search efforts in 2012?
