Do I Have a Career as a Bookkeeper?

If you are interested in a career in bookkeeping, can you book on finding a job sooner rather than later?

Small businesses that begin seeing growth hire bookkeepers on a freelance basis to outsource financial tasks they find frustrating. When businesses work with freelance bookkeepers, they are able to afford to pay for this outsourced work as needed. This is beneficial when businesses cannot afford to hire a full-time bookkeeper, benefiting the bookkeeper because they are able to manage their own schedule and clients.

With that in mind, those who enter into this field must have strong mathematical and accounting skills.

The Typical Bookkeeper’s Responsibilities

On a daily basis, bookkeepers are responsible for ensuring a company’s financial records are updated and maintained.

This includes managing bank accounts to verify that all deposits and payments are recorded properly. Another part of bookkeeping is keeping track of payments businesses must make, ensuring these payments are completed on time, and recording all of this information in the business’s financial ledger. It is also not uncommon for the bookkeeper to receive payments from the business’s clientele and it is their responsibility to ensure these funds are deposited into the business’s account.

Active communication with the business’s staff is also an integral part of a bookkeeper’s career. This is mainly because the bookkeeper is responsible for handling the transactions that occur from every staff member employed by the business.

Without proper communication in place, the bookkeeper has no idea these transactions are occurring until statements come in after the fact. This makes it difficult for the bookkeeper to ensure all financial records are up to date. Even though maintaining all of these accounting tasks is time consuming, it is essential that bookkeepers remain active communicators.

How Can College Students Enter Into This Field?

While there are no standard degrees or certifications specifically for bookkeeping, many businesses and organizations require bookkeepers to hold a certificate or a degree.

This certification or degree can be in finance, business, or record keeping. Use of bookkeeping software is making this career simpler and more streamlined, however specific training is still required in the areas of accounting and finance.

What Experience is Necessary for Bookkeeping?

In order to become a bookkeeper, you must have experience or education in basic accounting.

Local colleges and universities have certificate programs focused on all aspects of bookkeeping. Once enrolled in a certificate program you will learn how to perform accounts payable and receivable tasks, how to utilize more than one type of accounting software, how to process payroll, how to create journal entries in financial logs, and how to generate reports. If you have work experience related to any of the elements found in a certification course, the business may accept that during the hiring process.

Is There a Great Demand for Bookkeepers?

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 10 percent employment growth through 2018 for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks, and predicts about 212,400 new jobs between 2008 and 2018.”[1]
