Brush Up on Your Job-Hunting Skills

Could your job-hunting skills use some polishing? Here are some ‘insider’ tips to give you an edge over the competition.

Look around and you’ll find job-hunting advice at every turn. What you may not find so readily are insights into the minds of hiring managers. The following ‘insider’ tips can make the difference for you in a competitive field of candidates.

  • When making hiring decisions, ninety percent of employers value the advice of their administrative assistants.
This one fact underlines how important it is to be friendly and professional with everyone you encounter when applying to and interviewing for a job.
  • Experts estimate that 70 – 80% of available jobs are filled by candidates who learn of them by word of mouth.
Clearly, networking is a critical part of any job search.
  • Surveyed employers believe 30% of job-seekers lie on their resumes or intentionally leave out significant information.
Don’t be tempted to bend or otherwise spin the truth on your resume, as well as when conversing with possible employers and staff.
  • Qualities that most impress prospective employers during interviews, other than specific abilities, are verbal skills, enthusiasm and honesty.
Appearance and a good sense of humor are also important. Honesty is deemed the attribute most looked for by surveyed hiring managers.
  • untitled-2Between equally qualified candidates, the prospective employee who knows and understands the company and its needs, and who can talk persuasively about why their skills and experience meet those needs, has a definite edge.
Craft a compelling response for each company you interview with that demonstrates why your skills are the perfect match for that company’s needs.
  • Candidates who are the first to be interviewed tend to be hired less often than those who are interviewed later in the process.
We all have a natural inclination to pass over the first product we look at, thinking we’ll find something better, and hiring managers tend to do the same. It’s also easier to forget early interviews when an employer is talking with a lot of candidates.
  • Most job-seekers need to go to at least three interviews before they are offered a job.
Don’t give up if the first or second interview doesn’t pan out for you.
  • One often mishandled etiquette rule when doing interviews is to sit down before being asked to.
If you’re not offered a seat, go ahead and sit down after the person you’re meeting with has done so.
